Coming Out

(Author’s note:  You may have noticed that I have been publishing more frequently than usual.  While on ‘vacation’ last month, I ended up feeling inspired and writing more than expected.  Consequently I have a few posts in the queue.)

I have a dear friend who I have known for almost 50 years.  I witnessed him going through, and helped him through the toughest times in his life.  The time he began embracing his homosexuality.  It couldn’t have been easy, dissolving a five-year marriage to a woman, and being misunderstood, even rejected by those he was closest to.  And living as someone who is only a shadow of who he really is for all those years. Taking Tampa By Storm

Doug asked me where I would like to go for a mini vacation, and I said, “You know, I’m kind of bored of the Hamptoms” to which he responded,Hey, how about a Hurricane shelter?  I hear we’re getting a big one in a couple of days.   Category five.”  The idea sounded intriguing and I suggested, “We better beat the crowds, hit the facility early and get a good spot.”  Doug was already way ahead of me. This was in his wheel house, his element.   He spent years as a coreman in the military, and was in positions in which he was responsible for others in various crisis situations.  He’s been trained for it.

The Many Faces of Change

I have to admit, when I am bored and want a distraction, I will sometimes check out the news, specifically the latest on the current administration. I find it ceaselessly entertaining, like a well written soap opera. I am certainly not dismissing the serious nature of the goings on, but I am detached enough from all of it to see it much more clearly for what it is: the galactic story being played out beautifully.
