Patterns, familiar ways of experiencing reality, have been deeply entrenched in the human over eons of time. In a seemingly uncertain world, patterns of behavior give us a sense of safety. Predictability is essential for our physical and mental health. Patterns that the Planet follows, that Mother Nature follows, that society and culture, and our own family follows give us a sense of equanimity. Even if some of those patterns are not in our best interest.
Fear. It motivates people all of the time. Fear motivates them to work at jobs that bring them little joy. It motivates them to be in relationships in which they compromise their freedom, because the alternative is to be alone. They compromise their joy and freedom daily for a modicum of security. Fear motivates people to seek medical attention, get the next surgery, because they fear the body can’t rebalance itself. Some say people die of fear, not diseases.
For the female gender, sexuality, including sensuality has been seen as dangerous, as something she was not allowed to enjoy. The shame and stigma directed toward her and her sexuality was normalized. It was used against her, and she also used it as a weapon in order to protect herself and garner a modicum of respect and value. Continue reading “Women and Freedom”
